Artificial Intelligence Vs Machine Learning

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are trending technologies today and an inherent part of the computer sciences that are also correlated. These are two hot buzzwords today. Essentially used for creating intelligent systems, we can say that AI is a bigger concept, involving the creation of intelligent machines, which have the capacity to simulate human thinking and behavior. On the other hand, machine learning is a subset of AI, allowing the machines, to learn from data without any sort of explicit programming.

Today there are broad waves of technological change sweeping through the world and in it both these concepts have caught the imagination of the people. This is an exercise to understand both the terms so that the basic differences are understood through this understanding and analysis.

In Machine Learning application the idea is to give machines access to data allowing them learn for themselves.

The journey of AI

In Artificial Intelligence the design is to mimic human behavior. Computers are logical machines that have reproducing capabilities like arithmetic and memory, assigned with creating mechanical brains. Moreover, with the growth of technology, the concept of AI changed and the focus is on mimicking the process of human decision and performing tasks in more human ways.

Artificial Intelligence devices are classified into applied or general and the former are more common. Generalized AI systems or devices are less common, and they are an area leading to the development of state-of-the-art Machine Learning.

 Internet is playing a major role

The emergence of the internet, and the surge in the volume of digital information generated and stored, today contributed to the speed of development. Doing the tasks become more efficient through coding making the machines think like human beings, and then the later plugging them into the internet provides the desired information in the world. When the teaching happens computers can recognize images, and can also classify them based on the elements contained. The result is making statements, decisions, and predictions that are certain.

Through ML we can communicate and interact with digital information and electronic devices similar to a human being. Also there is an understanding of natural human communication, written or spoken, and there is a return response using similar, and natural language.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is a man-made thinking power, defined as a technology through which intelligent systems are created that have the capacity to simulate human intelligence. It need not be pre-programmed, but instead uses an algorithm to work with its own intelligence and is used in places like Siri,  AlphaGo, and in other applications. Its capabilities, determine the classification into three types- Weak AI, General AI and finally Strong AI. Presently, it is weak and general AI but in the future the AI will be Strong and emerge in all probability to be better intelligent than humans.

Machine learning and AI and some broad differences

∙  Machine Learning enables a computer system to make predictions or take some decisions using historical data without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning also makes use of a massive volume of structured/semi-structured data for generating correct results or giving predictions as per the data.

∙ Artificial Intelligence technology enables a machine to simulate various aspects of human behavior.  Furthermore, Machine learning is a subset of AI, which allows a machine to automatically learn from past data without programming explicitly.

∙ The goal of AI is to make a smart computer system similar to humans and solve complex problems. The goal of ML is to allow machines to learn from data so that they can give a correct output.

∙ Besides Machine learning,   deep learning is the main subset of AI.  Deep learning is the main subset of machine learning.

∙ The scope of AI is wide but the scope of Machine learning is limited.

∙ AI allows creating an intelligent system to perform complex tasks. But in the Machine learning machines are created to perform only the tasks for which there is training

∙ AI system is concerned about maximizing the chances of success. Machine learning is mainly concerned with accuracy and patterns.

∙ On the basis of capabilities, AI can be divided into three types, which are, Weak AI, General AI, and finally Strong AI. Machine learning is divided into three types of supervised learning, followed by unsupervised learning, as well as Reinforcement learning.

∙ AI is concerned with decision-making and ML allows the system to learn something new from the available data.

∙ AI leads to develop a system to mimic human to respond behave in a circumstances. ML involves in creating self learning algorithms.

∙ AI will find the ideal solution but ML will opt only for a solution irrespective of it being ideal or not.

∙ AI will lead to intelligence/wisdom whereas ML will lead to knowledge.

Artificial Intelligence is not a system but it can be implemented in the system. In it, intelligence is added so that the capabilities of a machine are enhanced. In Machine Learning an application of AI provides an ability to the system to learn automatically and improve from a series of experiences.

EXPLAINING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING

AI stands for Artificial intelligence, where intelligence is defined as the acquisition of knowledge and as an ability to acquire as well as apply it. Its goal is to increase the chance of success and it is basically smart work and solves complex problems.  

ML stands for Machine Learning and is defined as the acquisition of any knowledge or skill with an aim to increase accuracy, not caring about success. Its concept is that the machine takes data and learns from it to maximize the performance of the machine on a particular task. So their functions determine what AI /ML is and they will play a major role in the world today.
